THE ART OF EVERYDAY PERFECTION: AN INTERVIEW WITH NATHALIE CARVALHO

Luxury lies in the subtlety of invisible details, in that hushed harmony one senses the moment one crosses the threshold. At the Hôtel Elysia, this perfection bears a signature: that of Nathalie Carvalho. As the hotel’s iconic General Housekeeper, she orchestrates a daily ballet of precision and elegance, guided by an unwavering passion for the art of hospitality.

A calling shaped by high standards

At first, nothing seemed to point Nathalie Carvalho toward a career behind the scenes in the luxury hospitality industry. After earning her high school diploma at age seventeen, she decided to study art history in college. It was a chance encounter—through her best friend, who was then a student at the Médéric School—that sealed her fate. Introduced to a housekeeper looking for apprentices, the conversation sparked a true revelation within her. Captivated by this demanding world, she enrolled in the program and graduated after five years of rigorous training.

Her early career path resembled a journey of excellence through the capital’s most prestigious institutions. From the front desk at the Ritz to her formative experience as a housekeeper and room attendant at the Plaza Athénée—before returning to the Ritz—she experienced the reality of this deeply physical profession. She then shaped her vision of management by becoming House Manager at the Hôtel Costes, honing a rare expertise where every gesture counts.

It was love at first sight for the Elysia Hotel's setting

While working as an assistant at the George V, the director of accommodations introduced her to the management of the Champs-Élysées Plaza. The impact was immediate: it was love at first sight for the building’s architecture and spirit. Having become the guardian of the property, she has guided every transformation of the establishment, deeply experiencing the hotel’s evolution toward its current Haussmannian and contemporary identity.
This intimate knowledge of the hotel informs her day-to-day approach. She has successfully preserved the hallmarks of the luxury hotel world, subtly adapting them to the personalized service of this five-star gem. This success is built on a relationship of mutual trust and a perfect rapport with management, embodying the spirit of attentiveness so dear to the Inwood Hotels group.

The mark of discipline and kindness

As the daughter of a military officer, Nathalie Carvalho possesses meticulous attention to detail and unwavering self-discipline at all times. When she inspects a room, her seasoned eye takes in every nook and cranny. The bed—perfect and majestic—is her first point of inspection, immediately followed by the room’s scent. Everything must come together to surprise and delight the guest.

From the very beginning, her standard has remained uncompromising: to devote every day to unwavering dedication, so she can complete her shift with the noble sense of a job well done and the certainty of having provided our guests with total satisfaction.
This standard is accompanied by a deep commitment to the well-being of her teams. From the moment she arrived—enjoying complete autonomy from a management team that is always attentive to her needs—she banned the use of harmful products to protect her employees’ health, staying ahead of current environmental initiatives.

She places paramount importance on training, offering everyone the opportunity to grow within her team and passionately passing on the expertise she gained in luxury hotels. Today, her name is a respected benchmark in the industry, and the talents of tomorrow seek her out specifically to learn from her. Seeing her former apprentices thrive and work in France’s most beautiful luxury hotels is a source of immense pride for her.

A unique bond and the art of rejuvenation

This commitment of more than a decade at the same location is a testament to a rare sense of attachment. Nathalie Carvalho has fully made this historic building her own, to the point of considering it the home she doesn’t have. It is with this personal philosophy that she oversees every guest’s stay. Behind the scenes, she orchestrates the upkeep of the common areas and the preparation of the guest rooms with the precision of a master craftsman. Like a hostess, she performs this final, meticulous, and unseen check to ensure that everything is absolutely perfect even before the guest crosses the threshold.

The high standards she upholds every day stem from a way of life in which calmness takes center stage. Though deeply active by nature, she savors the serenity of her home to devote herself to her passions. Between tending her garden, beautiful outings in the great outdoors, and peaceful reading sessions dedicated to the works of Ernest Hemingway, she cultivates perfect harmony.

As someone who knows the neighborhood intimately, she also enjoys strolling down Rue d’Artois to admire the magnificent green setting of the Apicius restaurant. This exceptional spot is, in fact, her favorite place—the one she carefully chooses to celebrate a special occasion. She equally enjoys settling into the cozy little bars on Rue du Four and Rue de Rennes.

Finally, if the roles were reversed and she were to walk through the doors of the Hôtel Elysia today as a guest, Nathalie Carvalho would gladly let herself be charmed by the gentle ambiance of the place. She would take the time to savor the harmony of the soothing colors and, in turn, experience that sense of wonder delicately crafted by her own teams.

A magic that owes nothing to chance. For her, the very essence of this profession boils down to a philosophy she passes on as a legacy to the next generation: technical excellence can be acquired, but passion cannot be bought. At the heart of a prestigious establishment, a job done to perfection is, above all, the work of a passionate soul.
